At the Firm…

CCMI Kids Day was held in mid-July where Matt Showley and Brian Matter’s kids assisted the CCMI team at the office.  Brian’s children – Emma (12), Kai (9) and Koa (7), along with Matt’s children – Lizzie (8) and Jacob (5) gave their best efforts for their half day of work.  They helped deliver mail, clean up around the office, sort items, and they helped the CCMI team with a variety of other tasks.  As a project to learn about budgeting and researching costs, the children decided they wanted to hypothetically budget for a whale watching trip in Kauai and were tasked with determining the cost of airfare, rental car (they chose the convertible!), lodging, whale watching excursion, along with food and other sundries.  They then had to determine how many hours they would have to work making minimum wage to completely fund the trip (none of them were interested in working that long – they wanted their summer vacation back!).  Finally, they calculated the cost of paying for it on a credit card compared if they didn’t have the money to paying cash.  Each of them learned valuable lessons and are learning to work hard.

CCMI recently completed our 6-week client survey and we are pleased to report that we received excellent marks and important feedback about our level of service and the things clients value most about working with CCMI.  We will study the results and determine where we are able to continue making improvements.  Thank you to all who provided feedback!

Matt Showley is busy in his new role as President of the Estate Planning Council of San Diego as the board prepares for the upcoming year of meetings and a summer social in September.  Matt also attended a full day advisor study group in Santa Monica where he shared ideas among peers about how best to serve clients and run a better wealth management firm.

Brian spent a morning helping to interview candidates for 2019-2020 LEAD San Diego IMPACT program.  Brian, Matt and Kim are all graduates of this program and like to continue to give to the program by helping share their experiences with future candidates.

Matt Ryan has worked hard in overseeing the smooth transition to the new version of the Black Diamond reporting software that many of our investment clients may have noticed. The update was intended to modernize and increase the user experience for our online client portal.

Kim attended a Women in Business Progressive Dinner event which gave her an opportunity to get to know some of the newer members.  Kim also attended Women United’s event Women Who Wine where the topic of discussion “how to fight gender bias in the workplace” inspired by Lean In “50 ways to fight bias” program.  Kim enjoys spending time with each group and getting to know the wonderful ladies.

On the Homefront

Matt Showley’s family has had a busy July with kids at sleepovers, a weeklong trip to go hiking in Mammoth (sans Matt), days at the beach on the weekend, bike rides around their neighborhood, purging several old baby items that they no longer need, and tending to their vegetable garden.  Never a dull moment.

Brian’s family also had a busy July.  Brian was finally able to finish coaching baseball when Kai’s team was eliminated from the All-Star tournament.  The team advanced out of the initial stages of the tournament but was eventually eliminated in the double elimination round.  Overall it was a great season.  The family was happy to move past baseball and spent an enjoyable weekend camping at San Elijo in Cardiff, and then ventured to Banff and Jasper in the Canadian Rockies for a much needed vacation.  As of this writing they are currently hiking somewhere in Canada.  More to come on the trip next month.

Matt Ryan continued his summer theme of attending weddings. This month he attended two weddings. The first was his sister-in-law’s and the second was for close friends. They were back to back weddings so one was on a Friday and the very next day on Saturday he was able to attend the next. Both were gorgeous weddings and he and Jess really enjoyed the weekend of celebration.

Matt Ryan has also upped his beach volleyball playing to twice a week. He’s currently playing in Ocean Beach on Monday nights and starting to play with a group of friends in South Mission on Saturday mornings. He loves getting outside to utilize the beautiful beaches we have here in San Diego and enjoy a competitive volleyball environment with friends.

Katie and Ben also attended a wedding for one of Katie’s college friends at a beautiful rooftop venue downtown. They attended a concert at SDSU’s Open Air Theater. Although they really enjoyed the concert, Katie realized they are at the age where they should not do anything on “school nights” as they were both laughably tired the next day. They have also enjoyed walking through La Mesa Farmer’s Market on Friday evenings and going to Padres games.

Kim has done quite a bit of bike riding in the month of July.  She started the month with the annual Scripps Ranch Old Pros 50-mile bike ride while her husband Tyler ran the 10k.  Kim has done several 40 and 50-mile bike rides since then with her friends.

Monica and family enjoyed a long 4-day weekend celebrating the 4th of July. They have been catching up with friends and family with BBQs and Sunday music concerts in the park. They attended a wedding in Tijuana which was a sentimental and cultural experience. The month was also spent celebrating a lot of birthdays- 2 nieces, a nephew, a brother, several friends and Monica’s birthday at the end of the month.
